College Football Opening Weekend Ideas

The last two seasons, I've been able to go to the Chick-Fil-A College Kickoff in Atlanta.  If you don't know, thats a game of the SEC vs. ACC at the Georgia Dome, the site of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl every year.  A fantastic neutral site atmosphere.  And it got me thinking, why can't more teams get to do this?

Neutral site games are probably the most fun games I've ever attended.  Usually at a bowl site, they have the atmosphere of a bowl game, and its just a great time.  You've got bars that are all for one side or the other across the street from eachother, the local allumni chapters put on huge events.  Why not all teams?

Here is my idea:  College Kickoff Weekend.

Start small:  SEC vs. Big-12.  Twelve teams in each league, 12 neutral sites opening weekend.  Over time, all conferences should join in...all having 12 teams.  But for now, lets look at the logistics of an SEC vs Big-12 showcase.

The Sites:
Dallas
Houston
Kansas City
New Orleans
Nashville
St. Louis
Denver
San Antionio
Sherevepot
Fort Worth
Birmingham
Mobile
Memphis

A few weeks after the season is over, hold a televised drawing of the teams, and the sites.  Random selection.  You could regionalize the selections so you don't have Florida vs. Texas in Denver or something like that, but whatever.

Think of the Buzz:  Florida vs. Texas, Alabama vs. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State vs. LSU all in opening weekend.

Here is the best part:  its opening weekend, Labor Day, so you have FOUR DAYS to do this.

You take your weakest four matchups, and put them at Noon on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
Take the middle matchups, put them in the 3:30 slots
Take your top four matchups, put them in primetime on those four nights.

Everything is on the ESPN family of networks.

Sound off:  what do you think:

  1. Interesting idea, but wouldn't that interfere with Sunday Night NFL football?

  2. Not on Labor Day....at least not this year. College football usually starts a week before the NFL does.
